Fiction is an integral part of human life. Man has an inherent demand for recreation to get away, even though for a few moments, from the humdrum of life. Story telling has been among the earliest ways of accomplishing that and over the ages it’s become the varied forms of entertainment we’ve got in today’s world. Entertainment is essentially of two types – active and passive. The active entails physical participation in one way or other, while the passive does not. Fiction is essentially a passive amusement even though the mind plays an important part within it. Fiction constantly involves visualization whether it is covert or overt. The first form of overt visualization was the enacting of dramas as the civilizations developed. The development of technology brought in its modern forms – theater and television. The key form is inherent to story telling and reading. It is an inherent characteristic of the individual (or perhaps any) mind that a notion is always accompanied by an image. So as soon as one hears or reads a story the mind visualizes the scene as well as the characters; this procedure continues throughout the story and frequently even after it has ended.

Getting back to fiction the imagination of the writer also has to be based on his direct or indirect experiences. In this sense fiction relies on reality and to this extent it represents just another dimension of truth. Here of course we run to the philosophical difficulty of the exact meaning of reality. There are two diametrically opposite viewpoints – materialistic and spiritualistic. According to the former only things that can be perceived through our perceptions are real, everything else is unreal. The latter asserts that there is one ultimate fact from which all that we perceive comes out and what that’s perceived is only an illusion. We again look at a statement by Einstein: “Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a persistent one.” He was obviously referring to the fact of the phenomenal world. The word illusion can have different connotations but generally it means perceiving something as different from what it really is. Therefore the presence of the thing is a prerequisite for illusion, it isn’t a mental construction. Imagination is a mental phenomenon and has nothing to do with anything really existing. Thus the relationship between fiction and reality is entirely different from that between illusion and reality. It does take some time to write a complete story for any kind of book.
At a philosophical sense that the phenomenal world itself could be considered fiction. This is what Shakespeare perhaps meant when he wrote: “All the world’s a stage, and all women and men merely players”. We might also consider everything in the universe (space, time, issue) as players because everything has its entrance and exit. We of course run into the issue of saying what the stage is and who wrote the script. It isn’t merely a philosophical point. We invest a considerable part of our own life from the imagined or fictional world. We muse about the items in future and also live over the past imagining what could have been. The creativity about the future is based on our hopes and ambitions and also to some extent it’s a positive in the sense that we are in a position to mould our future if we sincerely attempt. But musing over the past is really a futile exercise since we know for a fact that ‘what might have been’ is only fantasy that never happened. Still it serves the same purpose as fiction in the point of view of entertainment. We amuse ourselves by imagining how life could have been, knowing fully well that it has no reality whatsoever. In a metaphorical sense past, at least the distant past, is fiction. At a particular sense history is fiction as it always includes the abstract bias of the writer. What we understand of Buddha and Jesus today is more fiction than facts.
